What are the precautions for using conveyor belts?

The quality of conveyor belt joints directly affects the service life of the conveyor belt. Therefore, we need to learn more about conveyor belt joints to better protect the conveyor belt equipment.


1、Why do conveyor belt joints tend to break or crack?

In the design of conveyor belts, the strength of the joint is lower than that of the normal belt body. The hot-spliced joint has the highest strength, reaching 80-90% of the belt body strength. However, the strength of ordinary conveyor belt joints is only 40-50%, and when cold vulcanization splicing is done with good quality, the joint strength can reach 60-70%. If the splicing method is incorrect during the process—such as excessive grinding, using substandard adhesive, insufficient overlap length or improper step design—it may cause the conveyor belt joint to break or crack.

2、How to repair a 14-15 meter longitudinal tear in the middle of a steel cord conveyor belt?

For a conveyor belt with a long tear (e.g., 14-15 meters), the following repair method is recommended: Cover both the upper and lower sides of the damaged area with cover rubber. The length and width of the cover rubber must exceed the damaged area by 0.5-1 meter. Then, refer to the cold vulcanization splicing method for repair.


3、If the temperature of the conveyor belt joint reaches 120°C but does not reach the normal vulcanization temperature, is it acceptable?

The vulcanizing agents and accelerators in rubber determine the normal vulcanization cross-linking temperature. Generally, manufacturers set a relatively high vulcanization temperature for safety. If the temperature reaches 120°C but does not meet the required vulcanization temperature, the rubber will not vulcanize, which will significantly affect the quality of the conveyor belt joint. If the vulcanization temperature is lower than the required temperature for the vulcanizing agents and accelerators to function properly, the vulcanization time can be extended. Generally, for every 10°C decrease in temperature, the vulcanization time should be extended by 2-4 times. However, this method is not recommended to ensure the performance of the rubber.


4、Can core rubbers from different manufacturers be mixed for use?

Each manufacturer has a different formula for core rubber, so mixing core rubbers from different manufacturers is not recommended. Currently, there are various types of rubber on the market, and formulas from different manufacturers may cause interactions. Mixing core rubbers from different manufacturers may affect their performance.
