Maintenance of Idlers

Idlers are core components of belt conveyors, responsible for supporting the conveyor belt and materials. The quality of their maintenance directly affects the operating efficiency and service life of the equipment. The key points for idler maintenance are as follows:

I. Daily Inspection and Cleaning

A comprehensive inspection of idlers is required before starting the machine every day. Focus on checking whether there are attachments (such as dust, oil stains, and material residues) on the surface of the idlers. If there is accumulation, it should be cleaned in time with a brush or high-pressure air gun to avoid excessive friction that may cause wear to the conveyor belt or jamming of the idlers. At the same time, observe whether the idlers rotate flexibly. You can gently push the idlers by hand. If jamming, abnormal noise, or excessive rotation resistance is found, mark them and conduct timely maintenance.

II. Regular Lubrication Maintenance

Lubrication of idler bearings is crucial for maintenance. Depending on the operating environment, lubricating grease (such as lithium-based grease) needs to be replenished every 3-6 months. In high-temperature environments, high-temperature resistant lubricating grease should be used. When lubricating, first clean the oil filler hole of the bearing seat, then slowly inject grease with a special oil injector until the grease overflows from the oil drain hole, ensuring sufficient lubrication inside the bearing. At the same time, avoid excessive oil injection which may lead to poor heat dissipation.

III. Fault Detection and Replacement

During operation, if severe wear on the idler surface (radial runout exceeding 0.5mm), abnormal noise from the bearing, damaged seals, or rust on the shaft end is found, the machine must be shut down immediately for replacement. When replacing, use idlers of the same model to ensure accurate installation position and parallelism with the conveyor belt, so as to avoid excessive local stress caused by installation deviation. After replacement, manually rotate the idlers to confirm there is no jamming before starting the machine.

IV. Environmental Protection Measures

For environments with much dust, high humidity, or corrosiveness, it is necessary to strengthen the sealing protection of idlers, regularly check the integrity of seals, and replace double-lip seals or add dust covers when necessary. Idlers used in open-air operations need to be regularly painted with anti-rust paint to prevent rainwater from seeping into the bearing seats. In addition, keep the area around the conveyor clean to prevent material accumulation from squeezing the idlers.

V. Recording and Summary

Establish a maintenance ledger for idlers, record the time of each inspection, lubrication, replacement, and abnormal conditions, analyze the wear pattern of idlers, and adjust the maintenance cycle accordingly. For idlers that are frequently damaged, check for issues such as conveyor belt deviation and excessive material impact, so as to reduce wear from the root cause.

Scientific maintenance can effectively reduce the failure rate of idlers, extend their service life by more than 30%, and ensure the efficient and stable operation of the belt conveyor.
